A.I.R Gallery is pleased to announce In The Nature Of, a solo exhibition of recent work by Mary Sweeney. Comprised of a selection of ceramic sculptures from Sweeney’s Leaf Pile Series, on which she has been working for the last two years, the exhibition invites the viewer to recognize the passing of time by creating a static moment.

The ceramic leaf piles are made from thousands of leaves the artist has collected around her home. The dry leaves are coated in porcelain slip. Through this method she incases the leaf, which is later burned away by the firing process leaving a ghostly white permanent manifestation of the seasonal leaf. Extracted from the natural cycles of growth and decay, the piles of leaves become a frozen moment in time, and a meditation on transience and permanence.

Sweeney states: “My purpose in making art is to evoke empathy
in the viewer. Concern for our relationship with the planet is a
theme present in my work. The images I choose are often a stand in for the human figure, and allude to contemporary social concerns of power and vulnerability.” The invitation to contemplate the leaves is contrasted with the inability to interact with them. This gesture offers a space for reflection on the future of dwelling together in our vulnerable world.

Mary Sweeney was born in Massachusetts and lives and works in New York City and the Western Catskills. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute and MFA from The City College of New York where she currently teaches. Sweeney has exhibited in New York and other cities through out the US including Boston, Chicago, Washington DC and Providence. She was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship and a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship Award. Mary is a New York Member of A.I.R. and this marks her first exhibition with the gallery.
