Nicelle Beauchene Gallery | 327 Broome Street
February 10 - March 12, 2017
Opening reception Friday, February 10th 6-8pm
Nicelle Beauchene Gallery is pleased to announce Exoplanet, its first solo exhibition with Brooklyn-based painter Jordan Kasey.
In Exoplanet, Kasey’s large-scale, indifferent figures seemingly nod toward another realm, one that is as much familiar as it is distant and unknown. The compositions are suffused with elements of both humor and melancholy, imbuing the work with a tension that is made manifest by its own paradoxical undertones. Introverted and stoic, these works are abundant with unexpected juxtapositions, idiosyncratic arrangements, and a subversive visual lexicon.
Employing a bold compositional rigor with a densely layered set of Surrealist strategies, Kasey’s psychological paintings reveal contradictory conditions of dream and reality by way of metaphor and association. Through strident colors, irrational shadows, undulating surfaces, and physically encompassing canvases, Kasey brings the viewer into a subtly shifting world that is at once anonymous and universal. The continuation of her mise-en- scènes beyond the confines of the canvas suggest silent spaces and uneasy encounters that extend and suspend time.
Jordan Kasey (b. 1985) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include Signal Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Greenpoint Terminal Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Phoebe Gallery, Baltimore, MD; Michael Jon Gallery, Miami, FL; and Whole Gallery, Baltimore, MD. Her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions including Human Condition at the Former Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center, LA; Revue Gallery, London; Johannes Vogt, East Hampton, NY; Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York, NY; American Medium, Brooklyn, NY; and Cuevas Tilleard, New York, NY.
