This conversation will explore the state of public art in the city by focusing on the recently unveiled installations enhancing stations along the new Second Avenue Subway line, as well as other recently commissions subway artwork. These distinct and large-scale public art projects represent some of the most keenly anticipated and celebrated examples of public art in the city’s history. Join Jean Shin one, one of the artists selected for the landmark Second Avenue subway commission, as well as Xenobia Bailey, whose work is featured at the 34th Street-Hudson Yards Station which opened in 2014. Along with the MTA’s Lester Burg, Shin and Bailey will discuss their experiences creating their highly unique installations as well as the current state of public art and its place in society. The conversation will be moderated by Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Director and Martin Friedman Senior Curator of Mad. Sq. Art at Madison Square Park Conservancy.
