Satelloon Wars | Events Calendar
Echo I, 1960 / Andy Warhol, 1966

Tribeca / Downtown

apexart | 291 Church Street

In conjunction with the show Exhibition Space organized by Greg Allen.

Artist John Powers discusses how the giant inflatable satelloon Echo I fits within the narrative of minimalist art.

Since 2008, John Powers has been writing about post-war art, politics, and cinema at his blog, Star Wars Modern. For this event at apexart, Powers will reflect on Project Echo, the giant inflatable "satelloon" the United States launched in 1960, within his ongoing exploration of sci-fi, Minimalism, and American power. In line with his Triple Canopy project "Star Wars: A New Heap", which juxtaposes imagery from the famous trilogy with examples of minimalist art and architecture, Powers considers the similarities between Space Race imagery and the art world of the 1960s.

John Powers is a New York-based sculptor who has recently exhibited his post-minimalist installations and sculptures at Saamlung project space in Hong Kong and in abstrakt Abstrakt at the Node10 Festival.
