Pablo's Birthday | 57 Orchard Street
October 12 - November 12, 2017
Pablo's Birthday is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Shawn Kuruneru.
"Everybody knows that if you just think about things, our minds are always dialectical. No sooner do think of one thing than you think of its opposite. Your mind moves around in a vast space. And you can get intoxicated. The only value of any medium, paint on a surface, or marks, is that the moment you deal with matter of some kind you're less unfree. The curious thing is that the more you cope with this matter, the less free you are. But in some other way it's like you go though another door. You're freer than in the so-called free state, before you used matter. "
-Phillip Guston 1968
Employing a wet-on-wet technique, Kuruneru layers water, acrylic and ink on the canvas; balancing design and chance the painting forms in the midst of swift brushstrokes on a shifting surface. Vertical lines made up of various tones, transparent and opaque colours, manifest as stripes in flux. The spaces in-between the lines reveal glimpses of light as if emitting from within the canvas. Ink is dripped by hand onto the surface then pulled by gravity in a synchronized motion across the perpendicular lines. The accumulation of ink dots oscillates between nearness and distance, establishing a warped sense of space, inflection and uncertainty.
