Rental Gallery began in 2004 in Los Angeles as a way to bridge the New York and West Coast art communities, as well as to provide a venue for flexible and experimental programming, both by local curators and gallerists, and those from out of town.

"Leaner times call for alternative strategies — particularly for some of the smaller art businesses. Joel Mesler, the on-trend New York gallerist, is the latest dealer to rethink his future. He is leaving Manhattan, gradually closing the Lower East Side space that he shares with Zach Feuer, to move to East Hampton on Long Island, where many New York (and other) A-listers have their holiday homes. It’s a risky move away from the city of contemporary art commerce, but Mesler has done the maths. “The cost of Manhattan real estate and other overheads have to be priced-in to the art you sell, and in a slower economy that isn’t sustainable. Plus, I’ve gained time to re-achieve joy in the gallery system,” he says. The new space will be called Rental, the name of the first gallery that Mesler founded initially in Los Angeles and then in Manhattan in 2007. His first show will open in May and will be, he says, “a portrait of all the artists I have worked with,” including RH Quaytman and Jonas Wood. "
