STEVE BALKIN: A SELECTED RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION

Saturday, June 6-Sunday, June 28, 2015
Opening reception: Saturday, June 6th, from 2:00 to 4:00pm

The Balkin Foundation is pleased to announce Steve Balkin’s first selected retrospective exhibition at the Sandisfield Arts Center, which is to be a preview of an 8-city international retrospective exhibition beginning in Spring 2016 (in Taipei, Oslo, Paris, London, Beijing, Shanghai, New York, and Hong Kong). It takes the form of a rich sampling of various periods since 1950s, demonstrating how Balkin’s main theme and formal approaches to the Garden of Eden--that ethereal attractions of love, passion, and intimacy between Adam and Eve--have continued to overlap and interpenetrate across time.

Much like his hero, Paul Cezanne, who believed "painting after Nature is not copying the objective, it is realizing one's sensation," Balkin paints quickly, laying on acrylic colors in thick, seemingly bold brush strokes, as both a reflection and reaction to his inner emotion, memory, and arousal. Most gorgeously, he applies his brand of texture, stroke, contrast, and color to exceed or challenge pre-considered limitation set by the market or critical dialogues. Though his style may be classified as a form of Expressionism or Abstract Expressionism, one art critic has coined a new classification of Balkin's style, which is LYRICAL EXPRESSIONISM.

To be sure, Balkin's work evinces formal conceits of his continuous life journey as, amongst other things, a teacher of art who believes in the Socratic method of learning and exploration, a preeminent authority in the world of antique toy soldiers, a remarkable photographer in possession of indelible images, an original artist who paints in expressionistic form, and, the most obvious of all, as a lover of all things created by Nature. Also, for us all, his work evokes sophisticated discourses about our own humanity, and that ever insatiable desire of mankind to search for love, passion, and intimacy.

Considered the father of Lyrical Expressionism, Balkin has been dedicated to his art, but it’s only late in his life that he has started to have representation and shows and critical acclaim. It’s mature work that has evolved in a steady way for over 70 years, that includes Andy Warhol’s estimation to boot.

Balkin is a New York artist.
